The Ukrainian central bank owns and manages the system.
The development and implementation of the e-hryvnia can become the next step in the evolution of Ukraine’s payment infrastructure, advance the digitalization of the economy, further promote cashless settlements and reduce their price, improve transparency of settlements, and boost overall confidence in the national currency.
The National Bank of Ukraine successfully completed a two-month pilot of a national digital currency, the e-hryvnia, which started in December 2018. However, when presenting its finding in February 2020, the bank indicated it was unsure what the impacts of a digital currency would be. In July 2021, survey results of the possibility of a digital currency have been published.

Main motivation/goals of the CBDC: Financial inclusion and cashless payments. The NBU saw the e-hryvnia as a disruptive technology that could potentially significantly change the ecosystem of the Ukrainian payment market and redistribute the existing roles of market participants. → The development and implementation of the e-hryvnia can become the next step in the evolution of Ukraine’s payment infrastructure, advance the digitalization of the economy, further promote cashless settlements and reduce their price, improve transparency of settlements, and boost overall confidence in the national currency.
